1. Fall is a good time to remember to clean the furnace filter before it gets cold outside.

The filter can be hosed clean outside, removing the accumulated dust which not only increases the furnace efficiency but also keeps the dust out of your home.

It's also a good idea to vacuum some of the dust that has accumulated inside the furnace.

2. Fall is also a good time to paint the outside of your home to protect the wood from the harsh winter weather.

3. Remember to turn off the water valve to the outside pipes before we get freezing temperatures to avoid costly plumbing repairs due to bursting, freezing water pipes.

4. Our original washer and dryers are aging and if you haven't replaced them yet, you may have trouble with them.

For some, repairs are not worth the expense however some repairs may be cost effective and extend the use of your appliance for a few more years.

For example, the washer no longer agitates but seems to function otherwise. This is probably due to a worn agitator part that is replaceable - email us for the details, one of us has already had to make the repair.

Is the dryer making a grinding noise when working? This may be due to one of the drying elements coming loose. This will require one to open up the dryer and put the heating element back in its place. For details, again email us.

Safety Tip: Before attempting any appliance repair, make sure you unplug it first !

5. Lawn Mower storage: empty the gas (can be reused in your car) and store.

Or to store with gas, do not store with gas indoors, add a "fuel stabilizer" (sold as such at your favorite home improvement store). After adding the fuel stabilizer, run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the stabilizer through out the fuel system. The stabilizer prevents "varnishing" the carburetor, that is clogging of the carburetor with gasoline residue.

6. Bring your frost, sensitive plants indoors.

7. Check/Change the batteries on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Don't have a carbon monoxide detector yet, buy one - their not expensive and it can save your life.

8. Do not use a salt based product for ice or snow removal. It will break up the concrete which can be expensive to repair.

If the concrete surface in front of your house looks pitted or broken, throw out the product you used last winter and buy one that says it's safe for concrete (usually contains magnesium chloride).
